Catechist Requirements For Children's Religious Education (Grades 1-8)

The catechist’s commitment is for two school years (September to May) and includes one to two hours of preparation for class and one-and-a-half hours of teaching the class once a week.

Create and share material, providing fun activities for children to learn about the traditions of the Church, the Word of God, and the Catechism.

We try to assign two catechists per class to teach as a team.

Volunteers must:

• Satisfy the Volunteer Requirements

• Be fully initiated, confirmed, Catholic

• In order to be in charge of a group of children, the catechist must be 18 years old or older; if under 18 years of age, please inquire at the Religious Education office about how to assist in a class.

Catechist Requirements For Youth Confirmation (Grades 9-12) 

The Confirmation Catechists are an awesome group of youth coordinators whose mission is to guide teenagers on a path toward a willing and full initiation into the universal Catholic Church. We can always use more youth leaders and coordinators.

• Be active parish members and Catholics in good standing with the Church

Catechist Requirements For  RCIA Adults (Over 18 Years of Age) 

RCIA Catechists walk side by side with adults who are interested to learn about the Catholic faith and Traditions. Preparing and leading adults on their journey of faith toward full initiation into the universal Catholic Church is a rewarding experience that deepens the catechist's faith as well.

Once you are a catechist for Our Lady of Sorrows, you are welcomed and encouraged to become a Certified Catechist in the state of California, if you are not already. Information about this can be found at "LA Archdiocese Catechist Formation" or by talking to the Director of Religious Education.
